GALAMSEY FIGHT; GJA PRESIDENT PUSHES FOR BOLD ACTIONS

By Osei Nathanael,

The Ghana Journalists Association President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has challenged President John Mahama to issue a "Manhyia Declaration" policy statement to mark a renewed and irreversible national resolve to defeat galamsey once and for all.

The GJA President's plea came amid escalating violent attacks on anti-galamsey enforcers and journalists. He recounted a briefing where the EPA boss detailed how galamsey operators, aided by armed men in uniforms branded as CID attacked enforcement teams with heavy weapons.

Speaking at the 29th GJA Awards, Dwumfour warned that the perpetrators are becoming bolder, more brutal, better organized and operating like gang of terrorists.

He also revealed that several members of the Association couldn't join the ceremony because some were fighting for their lives at the hospital after being involved in an accident when accompanying officials of the EPA on a galamsey assignment. " They were supporting the fight against this never-ending problem of galamsey."he said, announcing the GJA will take the necessary steps to facilitate their treatment.

The  GJA strongly condemned the "cowardly attack" on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), labelling it as a grave affront to the authority of the state and the rule of law.

The GJA demanded that the Ghana Police Service briefs the nation on the progress of investigations and leave no stone unturned in identifying, arresting and prosecuting all those responsible.

He also recommended Otumfour Osei Tutu II for his unwavering and courageous stance against galamsey. He also praised the Asantehene on how he has spoken boldly, acted firmly and defended Asanteman's lands with honour. The GJA urged His Royal Majesty to continue using his revered influence to protect Asanteman and to insist on being consulted before mining leases are granted within his jurisdiction.
