POLICEWOMAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY KILLING TAXI DRIVER IN WEIJA SHOOTING

The Ghana Police Service is investigating a fatal shooting incident in the Tetegu area near Weija, where a policewoman allegedly shot and killed a taxi driver following a confrontation on January 19, 2026.

According to the official press release from the Public Affairs Directorate dated January 20, 2026, preliminary investigations show the officer fired at the driver of a Hyundai i10 taxi cab amid the dispute. The victim was rushed to the Police Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. The policewoman sustained head and leg injuries after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to leave the scene and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Eyewitness accounts and media reports from sources like MyJoyOnline, Citi Newsroom, and GhanaWeb describe the incident occurring around 11:16 p.m. on the Accra-Weija highway, possibly stemming from an argument between a female passenger (later identified as the officer, Corporal Gifty Oppong from the Surveillance Unit) and the driver. Some initial speculation pointed to a fare dispute or other altercation, though the exact trigger remains under probe. Exhibits recovered include a live 9mm round, a magazine, and an empty 9mm cartridge.

The officer has reportedly been detained, and investigations continue with further details expected from the police.
