VETERAN GOSPEL STAR YAW SARPONG REPORTED DEAD

 

The Ghanaian gospel music community is in mourning following the passing of legendary musician Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the renowned Asomafo gospel group.

The veteran artist, widely celebrated for his contributions to contemporary Ghanaian gospel over several decades, reportedly passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Multiple credible sources, including reports from MyJoyOnline, Adomonline, and YEN.com.gh, confirm the news, with his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, verifying the development.

According to details emerging from the reports, Yaw Sarpong breathed his last at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, where he had been receiving medical treatment. This loss comes barely a month after the December 2025 passing of Maame Tiwaa (Mary Tiwaa), a key backing vocalist and central figure in the Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo band.
